Stikeman Elliott Hosts Greening Greater Toronto's "Greening Our Workplaces" Tenant Series Meeting; Commerce Court Announces Tenant Submetering Upgrade

TORONTO, May 27, 2010 - Today Stikeman Elliott LLP shared energy and cost savings information resulting from energy efficiency initiatives they've undertaken at their Commerce Court West offices, as they hosted the second meeting of Greening Greater Toronto's "Greening Our Workplaces" Tenant Series. The meeting, which was attended by other Commerce Court building tenants, is one of a series that brings Toronto region commercial building owners and managers together with tenants to share ways they can work together to reduce energy use in commercial buildings.

Stikeman Elliott shared the energy reduction measures they have initiated, such as revised lighting schedules and installing motion sensors, that combined have resulted in a savings of 455,800 kilowatt hours per year, and approximately $50,000 in cost savings. Stikeman Elliott has been awarded recognition as the first tenant Conservation Partner in the BOMA Toronto Conservation and Demand Management Program for their work and partnership with building manager, GWL Realty Advisors Inc. As the first national Canadian law firm to be certified Carbon Neutral, Stikeman Elliott hosted the meeting with the goal of inspiring other tenants to take action to reduce their environmental footprints.

"Our involvement with Greening Greater Toronto is a natural extension of our commitment to be an exemplary corporate citizen," said Jean McLeod, Chief Administrative Officer, Stikeman Elliott. "Our strategy includes initiatives which are largely measurable in cost and energy savings, so through our participation in the Greening Our Workplaces Tenant Series, we are partnering with our landlord to gauge our progress, sharing our experience with other tenants and seeing the difference we can make together."

Attendees also heard presentations from GWL Realty Advisors and building tenant CIBC on the energy efficiency measures they have undertaken, from Halsall Associates on research outlining the general business case for energy efficiency initiatives and from BOMA Toronto on their financial incentive program. GWL Realty Advisors also announced the building's new updated submetering system, which will provide tenants with real-time energy use data and load profiles to help them evaluate their energy consumption, plan and implement an energy reduction strategy and track resulting efficiencies.

"Sustainable initiatives such as energy conservation and waste management practices are a priority for Commerce Court. With our new submetering system, we continue to partner with our tenants to reduce energy consumption and lower operating costs," said Paul Hollins, Director Technical Services. "We are thrilled to participate with our tenants in these efforts and are grateful for the commitment of our property owner, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (bcIMC)."

The "Greening Our Workplaces" Tenant Series will continue with other meetings between major commercial building owners/managers and their tenants. The series is part of Greening Greater Toronto's Commercial Building Energy Initiative, which is aimed at breaking down the barriers to achieving greater resource efficiency in the GTA's existing commercial building stock.
